Nolan's Tree - You can make one, too!

When I began decorating Nolan's room, I knew that I wanted to display his name somewhere. I also knew that I wanted to display them in a less common fashion. For example, I didn't want for his name to just be in a straight line above his bed. I don't know why, but I always have to do something with a twist. I'm not satisfied to just do the same thing everyone else does. My occasional picky-ness led me to the idea of a tree.

But first, I had to find letters that I liked. I eventually choose some 3-D metal wire letters from Urban Outfitters. They were on sale for 2 for $8, and I thought that was pretty affordable compared to letters I saw elsewhere.

(I just checked Urban Outfitters and they no longer are selling the ones that I bought, but they still have some neat ones! Click on the link in the above sentence to see what Urban Outfitters has available.)

Here's a picture of the Urban Outfitter N, so you can see what they look like:

Oh, somebody grabbed the N!

Cutie!

Ok, back to business!

Once I had the letters, I started sketching and that led to a tree that would be a white silhouette with just the trunk and a few branches. The letters would be displayed at varied heights, as if hanging off the branches. At this point I enlisted my mom's help. She came over with a roll of paper - ok, it wasn't just any kind of paper - also known as a roll of wedding aisle runner. It worked perfectly too!

Here's how we made the tree:

Step 1: We taped 4 sheets of paper on the walls from the floor to ceiling with tape. You want plenty of width for the branches. Next sketch out your trunk with a marker on the paper following with the branches. I recommend using a dark marker, so you can step back and really see how the tree is shaping.

Step 2: Once you have the general shape you like, take the paper down and cut out the tree. Tape the trunk and branches back onto the wall, like the below pic:

Step 3: Trace the tree with a pencil. A pencil is very forgiving on your walls, so don't worry about using it. A marker may be seen through your paint.

Once you are done tracing, remove paper. I actually saved my tree trace in case I wanted to replicate it or if someone wanted to use it.

Sorry it's hard to see the penciled lines!

Step 4: Tape off your trunk for painting and then start painting! I used a small roller on the trunk and then different size brushes for the branches. If you add thin branches, use a small angled brush.

Step 5: Enjoy your tree! As you see in the above and below pictures, I've added hooks to attach my letters to the tree.

Nolan's tree made the room feel so much larger! It also serves as a nice visual statement, especially since it's in one solid color. Noley Bear noticed the tree right away and just stared and stared at it. He knows what trees are, but this one doesn't look quite like the ones he's use to. :)

Now all we have to do is add our letters!
Be back with another post on the finished tree!

"I'm 1" Vest

I may be on a vest kick with Nolan...but, seriously, vests on little boys are so cute!

Even though Nolan turned one already - ok, I'm behind as usual - I wanted to do some cute one year old pictures. Ok, course, he would need the perfect little outfit and I thought, "SWEATER VEST!"

So I marched on down (drove) to Children's Orchard and purchased a navy sweater vest by Baby Gap. It has a little green trim along the v-neck which I thought was nice. Then I headed over to JoAnn's and found some matching green fabric to applique with.

This is a super easy project and quick to do.

Here's how I made Nolan's little one (1) for on his vest:

Step 1: Print out a 1 in a font you like and size appropriate for it's placement. I just realized that I don't have a pic of the 1 I used, but I'm sure you can easily do all of this!

Step 2: Cut out your 1.

Step 3: Trace your 1 onto the fabric backwards. You will have the below:

Step 4: Before you cut out your one out of your fabric, add about a 1/2 inch allowance around all sides - you will see why in a couple steps!  (Just love this green fabric! It has a nice weight to it which is an added plus.)

Step 5: Next cut out small sections of the fabric allowance at the corners of the 1 or just make a cut where it is an inward angle (sorry, I have no idea what the right word is for this) so that it will fold easily. See below for how I made my snips...

Step 6: Turn up (or down) the allowance and press.

Your 1 is ready to be added to your vest!

Step 7: Here you can either use your sewing machine to sew on your 1 or you can cheat like me. I wanted to be able to use the vest again without the 1, so I used hem tape to adhere the 1 to the vest.

Here it is! Your customized 1 Vest!
Perfect for your one year old's one year old pictures!

Please forgive the crazy orange and blue towel that I used for some of the pictures. I used the towel to iron on my kitchen counter.:)

Children's Winter Party

We had a winter themed party for the tots at church. The food was to be wintery too. So I chose to do a veggie platter with cream cheese penguins. You can find tutorials on these little guys all over the internet. They are easy, yummy and cute as can be!

I actually have to give a shout out to my cousin Ginger....she made these for the holidays and posted pictures on Facebook.  I knew I had to make them for the kiddo's party when I saw her pictures! Oh, and the kids did love them! Nolan ate a bunch of them. He had never had cream cheese before and he was definitely liking it!

I put the tray together there and then walked it to the table...big mistake. I lost a couple carrot trees.

The poor penguins didn't fare well and most of them ended up leaning on other penguins. The directions called for toothpicks in the penguins, but with feeding children from 1 to 5, I thought it was better to leave them out. Oh, my trees also went dry on me.

Check out that snowman cheese ball(s). Talk about yummy! I could have ate the whole thing but I didn't want the other moms to thing I was piggy.

Here's another shot of the food table. My mom decorated it and it was darling! Everyone's food came out so nice...wish my penguin vegetable tray hadn't turned out so mediocre. Cute idea but in true Ashley fashion, I was hurrying and it didn't come together the way I wanted it to.

Here's Nolan when we got home. He slept on the floor in the living room for two hours. He was just partied out!

Favorite Things

I'm so glad Trader Joe's came to Kansas City! They have so many things I just love! I do wish they weren't located so far south, so that it didn't take 40 minutes to get there. I only make it out there every other month because of the distance.

One of my favorite things at Trader Joe's is their Chocolate Lava Cake! Can we just say yum!

If you are a Kansas Citian, you may have eaten at Morton's (formerly located at Crown Center). Morton's had one of the best Chocolate Lava Cake's I have ever eaten. Well, this little lava cake from Trader Joe's is pretty close to being just as good! Unlike Morton's lava cake, which you had to order at the beginning of your meal, this bakes in a mere minute...so they are ready in a jiffy!

Ta-da! I perfectly baked chocolate cake with molten center! Yum, yum, and yum!

It's also good with a scoop of Trader Joe's cherry chocolate chunk ice cream.

Don't forget to get all that yummy goodness that stays in the tray after you heat it! It's a full bite's worth!
